On December 7th, 2009 at 1:30pm GMT Starbucks invited musicians from all over the world to sing together at the same time to raise awareness for AIDS in Africa. In that one breathtaking moment, musicians from 156 countries played “All You Need is Love” together. Watch now, as musicians from all around the world come together and share a song.
TED’s description of the conference couldn’t be more accurate: Barry Schwartz makes a passionate call for “practical wisdom” as an antidote to a society gone mad with bureaucracy. He argues powerfully that rules often fail us, incentives often backfire, and practical, everyday wisdom will help rebuild our world.
I liked Barry’s Talk, so i thought I’d share it with you:
So i finally surrendered to the enchantment of the Flip camcorder!
You might know about it, but for those who don’t, the Flip camera is a compact video recording gadget focused on easing the process of publishing video to the web.
Here at Gelattina we are big fans of Seth Godin’s marketing wisdom. A few days ago Seth posted Watch the money, an article about companies that sell a product and service and have to be consistent with the actual use of their own service or product.
The article is kind of Well Duh! but it really is an eye opener because what might look like common sense is actually not that common.
How many times have you seen a web design company without a decent website? I rest my case.
I particularly liked the following statement: “Money is more than a transfer of value. It’s a statement of belief. An ad agency that won’t buy ads, a consultant who won’t buy consulting, and a waiter who doesn’t tip big—it’s a sign, and not a good one.”
The article reminded me of the expression “Eat your own dog food” which is used when a company uses the products that it makes. It can be a way for a company to demonstrate confidence in its own products, and hence a kind of testimonial advertising. A better explanation on the history of the expression can be found here.
So whatever it is that you sell, please be consistent enough to use it for yourself.
And if you are the buyer, beware of the companies that are not users of their own product. Why would you buy anything from them?
I strongly recommend you subscribe to Seth Godin’s newsletter so you receive a daily piece of advice from this wonderful marketing guru!
